Percussion and Drum Lesson Student Quotes:
Mr. Irish is such an amazing teacher; he’s always positive! He’s the best percussionist I know even if he tells you he’s a bit rusty. He always told me that I’m better than I think I am; and he would know.

Mr. Irish teaches me in a way in which I want to learn more and do my best! He does not criticize me in a hard way even when correcting my skills. He expects a lot yet still is not too demanding. He taught me that I have to take responsibility for my future success in drumming or anything.

It was clear he was always playing a huge part of supporting the band. I first knew him as the drumline instructor, but he turned out to be so much more: a performer, a motivational speaker, a composer. I attribute a large part of the band’s growth to his work there.
When he teaches, it is clear he is competent in his field of drumming (as well as many, many others!), but also accessible to students of all ages and levels. His emphasis on fundamental techniques makes for better all-around performers. His passion and consistently positive attitude compliments his motivational speaking, and I have personally seen lives changed and turned around in part due to participating in his programs.
Mr. Irish’s writing is unique, exciting, and effective. His writing especially compliments the hornline, and it is well-matched to each individual ensemble’s strengths. His writing is fun and enjoyable to play, and gets the audience just as pumped.
It was my pleasure to have worked with Mr. Irish, and he has my highest recommendations.

Thank you Mr. Irish! Must thank you for providing opportunities to play with the percussion ensemble, which no doubt had a hand in my musical experience! Like I said, you’ve taught me things about not only music but life, and it’s helped me keep up during rough times.
What Parents Are Saying….
I first met Jim Irish when our daughters joined the marching band at Eastside High School. The drumline was really struggling and was down to just a few. Jim gathered the students together and asked them what it would take to make them a successful drumline. Over the next three years, I saw an amazing transformation. By starting with the basic techniques and adding leadership skills, the drumline began earning respect and gaining members. When my daughter graduated from Eastside High School, the drumline had earned marching awards and raised its score over 30 points. I highly recommend Jim Irish both as a percussion instructor and as a motivator of students.

For all of the parents out there who have a child who wants to be a percussionist.
Jim Irish, in my opinion, is the one to send your child to. From past and present experience with my daughter, sessions with Mr. Irish have been time well spent.
Within days or weeks, your child will not only show remarkable improvement in his or her drum skills, but scholastic grades and overall self-confidence will improve.
I believe it is Mr. Irish’s own passion for the love of percussion that flows over to our children. The children pick up on the enthusiasm and begin to strive to do well musically. This enthusiasm flows over to their schoolwork and school projects through their overall self-confidence.
As a parent of one of Jim Irish’s students, I know my child is also taking from each session, values to apply everyday for a lifetime.
2 THUMBS UP for Jim Irish.

My son is starting to be more confident. I can see a real difference since taking drum lessons with Jim. Jim has a rare ability to motivate and see potential when others don’t. The kids respond to him and want to work. I did not think my son would WANT to practice but we see him “working things out” with his music while enjoying it more. I do not have to prompt my son to practice, he just does!
Jim has a way of energizing others (and the room!). If you want to improve professionally, get private coaching from Jim. His infectious positive attitude will help you excel in anything. He is the best!
Mr. Irish is too humble to toot his own horn so I will toot it for him. He is one of the most remarkable and talented teachers I have ever seen. He believes in students more than they believe in themselves. They achieve much more than they can first imagine and surprise themselves in the process. He also genuinely cares about his students and they can tell this. He has an ability to motivate others to be more disciplined, focused and more accomplished. I am so glad he decided to start giving private lessons and make the change from training corporate America to helping our kids in education. He had declined private lesson requests for many years. I encourage anyone to take advantage of his positive influence on our young people.
As an educator, I am proud to recommend Jim I for group or private percussion instruction. You will not have to worry about him with your drumline or student(s). He will help students while getting the most out of them, every time. I have seen him turn around poor situations (even extreme problematic groups) in a remarkably quick time. He can get students to work well together and learn how to improve their percussion skills. I still do not know how he does it. But he does time and time again. Our last percussion clinic with Jim was a coaching style event to prepare for a competition. We saw dramatic improvement and focus within one rehearsal! Just a normal day with him and his consistently high expecations for students. His enthusiasm is contagious!
Jim is one of those kind of people who can do anything. He can design artwork and graphics, write music, teach, program computers, conduct business… I used to be jealous because I watched him do anything he puts his mind to… and he does things well. But I must admit, his passion for music and drumming gets the prize. He has dedicated his life to music education now. I know it will make a difference.
DA, family friend
Jim has worked behind the scenes of music education and advocacy for many years and given countless hours to help both students and teachers alike. Even after personal hardships and tragic events, he “keeps on keeping on” pursuing his passion for music and the arts – espeicially when it helps kids stay in school and improve their grades, lives, and situations.
I’ve been honored to have him as our Percussion Instructor. He’s taken a group of unmotivated, disorganized “drummers” and turned them into the beginnings of a well oiled machine. Jim has extensive knowledge not only in Percussion performance but also in pedagogy. He is very good at breaking down concepts into manageable bits of information. He is a firm believer in positive reinforcement and a true team player. I am fortunate to have him on staff… He and I work together great. He listens to and understands my focus and intent for our program. I highly recommend him to any band director looking for a great clinician or instructor.
